Friends, Why We Need Them

By Carlyn Paschall

Are you an island unto yourself? You don’t need church or friends because you can do it all by your lonesome. You can pray for yourself, you don’t need anyone to intercede for you. You don’t need to go to church, because after all, you can read the Word for yourself. Ever met anyone like that?

The problem with this kind of thinking is we isolate ourselves and make ourselves an easy target for the enemy. We all need someone to pray with and for us. Suppose you are unconscious or your body is racked with pain? You may not be able to pray, but if you have a friend, that person can intercede on your behalf. Suppose you are tempted in a certain area – don’t you want someone to pray for your strength and that God will make a way for your escape? What about accountability – don’t you want someone to help you grow and hold you to God’s standard?

Did God mean for us to walk this walk alone, or did he mean for us to have friendships to lighten the load? Ecclesiastes 4:12 “And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threestrand cord is not quickly broken.” Sometimes you may have to pray a friend through, be a shoulder to cry on or just be there for them. If you don’t have a friend, are you depriving someone else in the body of Christ of these things and more? Maybe you’ve been hurt, by church people no less, or you are a loner and find it hard to make friends. After all, everyone seems to be in a “clique” or know each other, so it’s hard to fit in and find your place. Nevertheless, join a ministry and try to forge relationships (yes, us good ole Christian folk should welcome newcomers with open arms). Start small, smile and say hello to the people are around you (or even smaller, the person sitting next to you). Proverbs 18:24 says “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.” Ask God to help and guide you and for friends you can trust. Yes, all this may take extra effort on your part, but I think it would be well worth it in the end.

friendship-grey-childrenYou aren’t meant to live in a bubble. Don’t live and die without anyone knowing you existed. You have a gift and it’s for the body of Christ. We need you.
