Day 9 Proverbs Challenge: Lady Wisdom or Madame Whore

by Latricia C. Bailey

“Having dismissed her serving maids, Lady Wisdom goes to town, stands in a prominent place, invites everyone within sound of her voice: “Are you confused about life, don’t know what’s going on? Come with me, oh come, have dinner with me! I’ve prepared a wonderful spread—fresh-baked bread, roast lamb, carefully selected wines. Leave your impoverished confusion and live! Walk up the street to a life with meaning”

Proverbs 9:3-6 (MSG) (emphasis added)

The Word of God constantly and consistently reminds us that the fear of the Lord will lead us into understanding Him and our purpose in life. This fear is not one of being “scared”, but it is a reverent and holy fear of an awesome and righteous God. It is only through living a life of worshiping Him and regarding Him as truly awesome that you will start to understand wisdom in order to gain spiritual insight into life. This wisdom is called Lady Wisdom in the Book of Proverbs. She will lead you into an intimate and personal relationship with the Lord when you choose to follow her.

“It’s through me, Lady Wisdom, that your life deepens, and the years of your life ripen. Live wisely and wisdom will permeate your life; mock life and life will mock you.”

Proverbs 9:11-12 (MSG) (emphasis added)

The Word tells us not to waste time on correcting people who foolishly ridicule and take no responsibility for their errors. If you correct the wicked you will get hurt, so don’t bother. Instead, correct the wise, and they will love you. Wisdom is for your own good. If you scorn wisdom or are rude and show it no respect, you will be the one to suffer.

“Then there’s this other woman, Madame Whore — brazen, empty-headed, frivolous.  As people walk by minding their own business [she] calls out, ‘Are you confused about life? Don’t know what’s going on? Steal off with me, I’ll show you a good time! No one will ever know — I’ll give you the time of your life.’ But they don’t know about all the skeletons in her closet, that all her guests end up in hell.”

Proverbs 9:13, 15-18 (MSG) (emphasis added)

Those who decide against following godly wisdom and live their own way will end up following Madame Whore’s way. Choose today to follow Lady Wisdom.
