Packin’ Light

by Latricia C. Bailey

This is the best time to start unpacking and lightening your load while you are at home!  I’ve packed luggagealways found it a challenge to pack light when I had to travel or condense my load. The idea of just taking a “few” things with me often made me think I would end up needing something that I left behind, like my pajamas or extra underwear. I remember, as a child, forgetting my toothbrush and having to use a wet washcloth with toothpaste on it to clean my teeth. Yuck! Or the time when I switched purses only to realize I left my cash and driver’s license in the purse I left at home. Ugh! There are other stories I could share, but the point of the story is that packin’ light requires more than just leaving things behind to lighten your load.

The Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:1-2 (NLT):

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy  awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.

So basically, our load when we’re packing can often be compared to a load of anything that may hinder us or trip us up from this race we are in called life. For the Christian, it means that his or her life is targeted toward a life in Jesus the Christ. We who are Christians must strive daily, moment-by-moment to live as witnesses running this Christian race with our eyes fixed on Him as we go. This can be tricky for those of us who often forget that Jesus is perfect and we are not. We carry extra weight that slows us down or trips us up.

For some, it’s the weight of shame or doubt or wrong thinking. For others, it may be circumstances, conflict, poor judgment, pride, bitterness, hate, or unforgiveness. There are many things that can be considered “weight that slows us down . . . that so easily trips us up.” But when we keep our eyes on Jesus, focusing solely on the joy that awaits us in Heaven, then we can run with endurance.

Stop focusing on what you may leave behind when you are running your race in Christ. Start off wise and keep your load light by packin’ only what won’t slow you down or trip you up. Pack God’s Word, and remember His love, joy, peace, and forgiveness. Take some patience, understanding, grace, His favor, and rest as you pack. You will face many challenges along the way with people, places, and circumstances, but because Jesus has already traveled this way before you, He is the champion that will initiate the race and perfect our faith as we go. Pack Him up first, and lighten your load. Oh, and don’t forget clean underwear and a toothbrush too!
