Christmas Memories

by Tammy Phillips

It was so tall. My sisters and I had to rear our heads back to see the star on the top of it.

For years, my parents took that artificial Christmas tree out of its worn old box. Then we would put it together, pile on the tinsel and bulbs and lights, cover each branch with fake snow and then illuminate the tree with the spinning four-colored wheel. Our tree was Phillips, pretty and warm. It looked like it was touching the ceiling.

Then something happened. Our old tree shrunk?

I did not have to maneuver my head to the see the top star. My toes did not have to tippy to put the garland and ornaments on the top branch. My sisters and I had grown almost as tall as our tree. I remember when I was in my early teens being amazed that our tree and our Daddy were not tall at all.

My nephews continued the tradition of being in awe of the tall Phillips tree, pretty and warm, until they too shot up near the star. But even when our perspective changes, it was comforting to know some things stay the same.

Daddy was no decorator.  But, Mommy was gone, and we were grown and he decided to try, so… Continue reading

Christmas and #lovechallenge2017

by Sharman J. Monroe

2017 was a year full of events in our lives. Some events we loved, some we just liked and some we could have lived without. We lost some people dear to us and we welcomed new people into our lives.

As a result of these events, we are each a different person than who we were on January 1, 2017. How so? Because all the events we experienced changed us into the person who is reading this message.

Hopefully, the events made you stronger, more courageous, wiser than you were before they happened. If they did, you experienced personal growth. If they didn’t, I invite you to revisit event and reassess them and their effect on you. Now that time has passed, I bet you see them in a different light.

We are all busy running here and there doing holiday stuff. Continue reading

The Best Christmas Gift

by Sharman J. Monroe

For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
     Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)

I first learn this verse in a song when I was in choir in elementary school. I didn’t know then it was a scriptural verse; I just knew it was part of a song in Handel’s Messiah. We sang the first verses twice softly and in a short round. We sang the third verse twice; first the sopranos then the second sopranos and altos. We sang the fourth verse together as one voice. And the last two verses, we belted out in 3-part harmony. The audiences always loved it. I loved it too. Singing the last two verses was my favorite.

Jesus told us, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29-30).

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines yoke as “a bar or frame that is attached to the heads or necks of two work animals so that they can pull a plow or heavy load together.” The two are bound together Continue reading

The Best Gift Ever

by Sharman J. Monroe

Today is Christmas Eve, the height of the holiday season.  If you are buying gifts, wrapping gifts or buying food to share with family and friends, you are blessed.  If you are financially strapped and your giving is limited, you are blessed.  Why? Because each and every one of you has been given the best gift ever.

Christmas is not about our ability to give.  It’s about what God gave to us – Jesus Christ.  God created us to be with Him for eternity. Sin, however, detoured us from God’s plan and only a sinless blood sacrifice could put us back on track.  Nothing and no one in this world fit the requirements. BUT God…being omnipotent, omniscient and omnipresent, already had the fix in place!  (1 Peter 1:17-21; Revelation 13:8). On that day in Bethlehem, Continue reading
